Improper use of verbs taking one objects

　　Wrong：老师常常说我们：“你们学习努力，进步很快”。

　　Right：老师常常对我们说：“你们学习努力，进步很快”。

　　“说我们”is the word-to-word interpretation of blame and criticism. Thus “说我们”contradicts the meaning of the following clause “你们学习努力,进步很快”. The right pattern should be “对…说”.

　　Example:

　　Wrong：我说他了，下星期学习第三本书。

　　Right：我告诉他了，下星期学习第三本书。

　　The predicate verb here may be considered to have two objects, with one referring to the person (“他”); the other referring to the event (“下星期学习第三本书”). We replace “说”by “告诉”.
